The little bar they’d found on St. Thomas was filled, but there were no blaring lights. She and Tristan sat together as Laura danced in her chair to the music.

“This is so much better than ice cream,” Laura said and tapped her drink against Belle’s Sprite-filled glass. “But I do want ice cream before we go back to the ship.”

Belle forced a laugh. “Uh, I don’t know. Ice cream is pretty hard to beat.” Her head had begun to hurt again and her stomach churned, but Laura needed this. She could remember needing a friend and not having one.

“I can’t believe you punched Paul,” Laura said.

Tristan chuckled. “It was a great punch too. She popped him right in the jaw.”

“He had it coming.” Belle rubbed her still-aching knuckles.

Laura shook her head, like she still couldn’t believe it. “I wish you’d have a drink with me.” She’d pleaded with Belle for over an hour to join her.

“Nope. This fish is firmly on dry land. I think I drank enough last night to fulfill my lifetime quota.” Belle punctuated the sentence by taking a gulp of her Sprite.

Laura put the straw to her lips and sipped her drink. “Last night was fun.”

“I wouldn’t know.”

Tristan chuckled. “You were incredibly cute in your fish pajamas.”

Belle chuckled. “Oh yeah, I did wear those. That I remember. Circa pre-Jim Beam.” Her head swam, and she closed her eyes.

“I can’t believe you two aren’t a couple,” Laura said and pursed her lips.

Belle’s eyes flew open, and she froze. “What?”

“You told me last night that you two aren’t actually dating.”

Cripes. If she had, she didn’t mean to.

Tristan put his arm across her shoulder. “We had a fight. We are a couple. I was an idiot, and she’s more forgiving than I deserve.”

Should she keep up the charade? Paul wasn’t in the picture any longer. Laura was trying to be a better friend, and yet, Belle couldn’t bring herself to tell her the truth. “I thought he hated me.”

“Why?” Laura asked.

“I don’t know,” she said and looked up at Tristan. “We were eating, and I asked a question. Next thing I knew, he got angry and left.”

Tristan put his lips to her ear and whispered, “I have been to San Juan before. It was an innocent question that should’ve been given a simple answer.”

His breath tickled her neck, and a giggle popped out. Without thinking, she leaned into him. “And that was all?”

“That was all.”

“I feel like a third wheel here.” Laura put her drink down. “I want to dance. You guys want to dance?”

Belle shook her head. “Uh, I think we established in high school that I don’t dance.” There was no way she was going to dance, even if she could. Her stomach churned like a riptide now. One step, and she’d be on the floor.

“What happened?” asked Tristan.

Laura burst out laughing. “She’s horrible. It’s like pool with music.”

“Exactly. It’s like pool, only,” Belle waved a hand over her body, “this is the weapon of choice.”

Tristan threw his head back and laughed.
